Becky Warren

One of the goals of our eAntidote blog is to introduce you to the real poison experts who answer the phones at the Maryland Poison Center (MPC), as well as our staff members. In addition to being nurses and pharmacists, they are parents, grandparents, artists, athletes, sports fans, and more! Read the Q&A below to get to know one of our specialists: Becky Warren.

Why did you go into the field of nursing?

I began my nursing career as an animal nurse. I had often been told that I was very comforting in stressful situations, so I decided to take my nursing practice to the human side of the medical field. I enjoy working in emergency situations and juggling all the dynamics that come with it, while still keeping everyone as calm as possible

How did you end up working at the Poison Center?

As a pediatric emergency room nurse, I often called the Poison Center on cases. I was impressed with how quickly they were able to help in serious situations. Everyone we talked to on the phone was so nice and helpful and seemed to truly love what they do. I always thought it would be such an interesting and fun place to work. I happened to be talking to someone who works at the Poison Center and asked if they were hiring, and it all snowballed from there! I am very excited to be a part of this fun team.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

The variety of calls we get each day! I also feel like I can use my clinical skills while still helping others when they call in with endless varieties of cases. Each day is different and unpredictable. It’s also great being able to help people, even from the other side of the phone! It’s as exciting as being at the bedside of patients.

Why are Poison Centers and poison specialists like you important?

As a prior pediatric emergency room nurse, I saw firsthand how many patients would come into the emergency room that could have been managed at home with the Poison Center. The Poison Center should be the first place to call when a poisoning happens, as long as they aren’t having trouble breathing, are not having seizures, and are conscious. Calling the Poison Center first saves unnecessary waiting and costs at the emergency room. It also helped emergency rooms be more available for other emergencies that need their help.

What’s an important message you want to share about poison safety?

Don’t ever hesitate to call if you feel like something is not right or you or someone you know has been poisoned. We have quick access to a variety of resources to help in every situation. At the Poison Center we can help people stay safe in emergency situations.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?

I enjoy spending time with family and friends! You can often find me spending time outdoors including going camping and hiking. The beach is my happy place!

Guest Staff

From time to time, we’ll feature posts from one of our staff members. We have 14 Specialists in Poison Information (we call them “SPIs,” pronounced like “spy”) who are pharmacists or nurses that have more than 250 combined years of experience answering our phones, and who have all passed an additional certification exam that tests their knowledge of poisons of all kinds. We also have Toxicology Fellows who are completing a two-year fellowship in clinical toxicology to develop their knowledge and skills to prepare them for their future career. Before joining our team, they worked in pharmacies, clinics, or hospitals. It’s safe to say they’ve heard it all.
